Shawn McDonald launches run for Fort Bend DA, aiming to unseat two-term incumbent Brian Middleton

McDonald, a Republican, is seeking to unseat Middleton, a Democrat who has led the office since 2019. McDonald said his campaign will focus on public safety, victim services and what he described as “steady leadership” in the county’s top prosecutorial office.

“Our communities need safe streets and a justice system that works for everyone,” McDonald said in a statement.

McDonald has handled thousands of felony cases, he said, and he was appointed Sugar Land’s municipal judge in 2022. His background also includes appellate work and teaching roles in criminal law and trial advocacy.

His entry into the race comes as Middleton seeks a third term after becoming the first Democrat and first person of color to lead the district attorney’s office in more than two decades.

“This office needs focus, responsibility and experience,” McDonald said. “I am ready to serve.”

McDonald said he would prioritize prosecuting violent offenders, supporting law enforcement and improving communication with victims.
