Shawn McDonald has dedicated his entire legal career to service, to seeking justice, protecting families, and standing up for the people of Fort Bend County.
Shawn McDonald began his legal career as a felony prosecutor in Henderson County, where he tried thousands of serious criminal cases ranging from capital murder to major narcotics offenses. Over more than twenty-five years in Texas courtrooms, he has first-chaired nearly 100 jury trials, been appointed Special Prosecutor in the nationally watched Sandra Bland case, and earned board certification in Criminal Law, a distinction held by fewer than one percent of Texas attorneys. Shawn holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and a Juris Doctor from St. Mary’s University School of Law, where he graduated early and clerked for the Presiding Judge of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals.
Shawn’s commitment to justice is rooted right here in Fort Bend County. He joined the Fort Bend County District Attorney’s Office in 2004, working side-by-side with local law enforcement to protect families and neighborhoods. In 2006, he opened his own criminal defense practice in Sugar Land, giving individuals from every walk of life a strong advocate when their liberty was on the line. Today, he serves as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Sugar Land and has served on the Board of Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers, reflecting a career dedicated to both public safety and fairness. His guiding principle has always been clear: follow the law, seek the truth, and do what is right for the people he serves — not what is politically convenient.
Shawn is a longtime Fort Bend County resident, deeply rooted in the Sugar Land community where he and his family are actively involved in local life. As a husband, father, and judge who has seen the justice system from every angle, he understands what is at stake for families across Fort Bend County: safe neighborhoods, a system that is tough on violent crime yet fair to everyone, schools and small businesses that can thrive, and county leaders who respect their values, their rights, and their hard-earned tax dollars.
Fort Bend County is at a crossroads, facing serious challenges from rising crime and drug trafficking to strained court resources and growing mistrust in the justice system. Shawn brings real-world experience as a frontline prosecutor, seasoned trial lawyer, and Municipal Court Judge. He knows that public safety, equal justice under the law, and fidelity to the Constitution are not talking points; they are the foundation of life in Fort Bend County. He believes this community deserves a District Attorney who will put justice over politics, principle over partisanship, and the people of Fort Bend County over special interests.
